Is Norfolk the best place to visit in the UK for foodies?

December 04, 2024

We asked Michelin Rated Chef, Elliot Ketley what he thinks about Norfolk's foodie scene...

We knew the best person who could help us with this article...Michelin rated Chef, Elliot Ketley.

Elliot began his career in the capital, later broadening his expertise across Britain and the USA. His achievements include opening a Sunday Times Top 100 Hotel in Cornwall and a highly acclaimed restaurant in Midtown Manhattan.

Most recently, Elliot garnered widespread praise for his work at Sculthorpe Mill in Fakenham, earning the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand. He is also the founder of the innovative 'Hello Sailor Supper Club,' which Little Massingham Manor had the privilege of hosting in collaboration with The Female Fisherman, Ashley Mullinger.

We asked Elliot what he thinks about Norfolk's Foodie Scene...

Ive been cooking in Norfolk now for over three years and from a chefs perspective its an incredible place to work! The landscape constantly illustrates the seasons to you and you are guided by and get access to some of the best ingredients in the country.

I know when the asparagus is being picked and at its best because I see it happening on my way into work...the farm co-operative I work with text me to say last nights’ frost has done wonders for the brassicas and to buy them now - they’re sweet and delicious! Or that the purple broccoli is going to finish this week!

Foraged mushrooms, herbs and wild game are constantly on offer form the dedicated game keepers and foragers you get know. Some of the finest shellfish and fish is landed on this coast - it's hard to think of a better stocked larder of great foods than this little corner of the UK.

Due to the continued demand for places on my supper club nights, I've recently decided to offer a bespoke in home dining service where from the comfort of your home, holiday rental or Little Massingham Manor, we will come and cook a pre-agreed menu using the finest ingredients form in and Norfolk!

While Norfolk really comes alive in the summer and the county swells with the influx of visitors keen to enjoy the big skies, the winter months has some great experiences - and so here are my top 5 picks of foodie things to try during the Autumn winter months...

1) Jarrolds Food Hall Norwich: Take a stroll round and pick up a few festive treats and then head to the royal arcade for lunch of dinner at Yalm, keenly priced with a food style to suit everyone and best of all no reservation required!

2) North Norfolk Cellars, Wells Next The Sea: A little bit of luxury by the sea, the best cheese board in the county to enjoy with an exciting collection of wines and friendly advice on what to try by wine guru, Bert Blaize, sommelier and author with possibly the best name in the business.

3) Monday night curry club at the Rose and Crown Harpley: A changing selection of delicious curries served with a free beer , need I say more !!

4) Sculthorpe Mill Quiz night: A very competitive but fun bi weekly quiz hosted at the stunning Sculthorpe Mill, that being said the best part for me is the £10 meal deal with your quiz entry, the best deal on a dark Wednesday night.

5) Sunday lunch at the Gunton: Still one of the best pub experiences to be had anywhere, almost annoyingly good ! Take a walk around the deer park then sit back and feast on the amazing lunch cooked by Stuart Tattersal and his team!
